Urban Painting | Portuguese-French urban artist Nuno de Matos aka Matox (not to be confused with Pedro Matos!) won this year’s Urban Award for painting, for what reason I had the chance to take a closer look at his brilliant abstract calligraphy paintings in Berlin!
Nuno de Matos is inspired by art from wide variety of periods in human development: all the way from the days of cave-paintings to the scrawling street art of our fast-paced contemporary society. This evolution can be seen in the rich layering of acrylic, spray paint, and marker used to create these complex and fluid designs found in each unique modern art canvas. (fokal.com)
Matox studied at the University of Toulouse and developed an expressive, line-based abstract style since the 80s. Although his artworks remind me of those by Brooklyn-based urban artist José Parlá, I like the complexity of the different layers of calligraphy-inspired lines. What do you think?
