Art Exhibition: Urban & Street Art Showcases

After releasing their Urban Art Guide Vienna and showing Usual Misdeeds by Vinz, Inoperable Gallery in Vienna is going to present the next big thing: Next week, famous ETAM Cru is going to open their Mind Trip exhibition… The Polish duo will make their way to Vienna for their first show in Austria. Last week, I followed Berlin-based Quintessenz Creation crew and Danny Doom to their exhibition setup at OZM Gallery in the creative heart of Hamburg city! Entitled …think of all the stories we could have told, the Danny Doom meets Quintessenz show presents a large number of their own canvas works including screen prints, paintings and experimental technique mashups as well as massive canvas collaboration works, combining all their different styles, tastes and color-preferences. This interesting mixture makes the art show a nice starting point for those who want to see the latest urban-inspired art trends from Berlin! ...

One of my personal heroes, Portuguese-born artist Pedro Matos is going to exhibit at Ivory & Black this April! The show, simply entitled Heritage is Pedro’s first solo-show in London and features new, monochromatic oil paintings by the artist, who became famous with those awesome graffiti-inspired portray-paintings… Pedro Matos’ paintings feature a rich and complex layering consisting of different languages of painting, which combine texture, patterns, realistic figurative painting and text. Through this visual language, his work draws the viewer into a dialog surrounding the impermanence of social and cultural values. Inspired by the french philosopher Michel Foucault’s work, subject to his paintings and explorations are the themes/concepts of Knowledge, Power, History, Sexuality, Discourse, Episteme and Impermanence. The exhibition will also comprise the release of a limited edition artist’s book of Pedro Matos’ work and life. (Ivory & Black) ...

In April, Berlin’s one and only sticker-museum Hatch Kingdom and illustrator Ink-a-zoid are going to present a group exhibition of the finest contemporary Berlin illustration styles! Presenting latest works not just by Danny Doom, Hr.v.Bias, Aro and Ink-a-zoid himself but also by other illustration-inspired artists, the show combines computer-generated artworks with dirt and coffee made ones and graffiti-influenced stuff. Hence, Modern Dopeness mirrors not just a current particle of Berlin illustration, but gives a insight into this new generation of mixed-media artists I already wrote about yesterday… ...

Valencian urban artist Vinz is going to open his first solo show in Austria in two days! Vinz, whose life-sized wheatpastes can be found in the streets around the globe, was recently part of a group show currated by the founders of Wooster Collective, and exhibited at Jonathan Levine Gallery in New York. In his works he usually combines humor and politically charged messages and uses nude male and female figures as a symbol of freedom, which is why they normally attract much attention… ...

Next month, the popular Berlin-based Quintessenz Creation crew (remember their great stop-motion videos True Colors or Color my Kingdom?) and well-known painter Danny Doom (here some shots of his latest show) will together have an exhibition at OZM Gallery Hamburg, presenting amazing collaboration artworks, bringing together the colorful, comic-like characters by Doom and the style-diversity and print-affinity of Quintessenz… Their both foibles for experimental works, breaking borders of plain canvas paintings and their graffiti backgrounds are superb preconditions for an exciting show with striking artworks of different size and medium. I’m really looking forward to this show and will try to come to Hamburg for the opening, as they’re not just great artists but also good friends of mine! ...

It’s all about stickers, stickers, stickers - The Stick Core sticker exhibition will show stickers by artists from all over the world, discovering this specialized urban medium as a part of street and urban art culture! With their wonderful diversity of color, form, elements and expression, in the last years stickers got featured in several exhibition around the world, like the Oversized & Underpriced shows in Berlin. Punk, skate and graffiti influences versus cute ninja rabbits, foxes and other illustrative characters - that’s the wild mix content of the Danny Doom vs. Flamat exhibition which opened its doors last Friday at Neonchocolate Gallery in Berlin, presenting culture clashing artworks by urban artist Danny Doom from Berlin and by Leipzig-based illustrator Flamat! As some voices revealed, this art-show is the first part of a more complex art tour by Danny Doom (e.g. including the so-called living-room art tour) who is going to celebrate this last doomed year 2012 (just remember the Maya calendar!) with several different art events taking place probably around the world. ...

As I already told you, the first Mark Jenkins exhibition opened its doors yesterday presented by Gestalten! The famous street sculptor showed not just photos of his popular works, but also included new Jenkins sculptures made in Berlin. Furthermore, Gestalten used the artist’s Berlin residence to publish his first monograph The Urban Theater: Mark Jenkins. In addition to Mark Jenkins’s sculptural work, Glazed Paradise includes photographs of select installations that reveal how compelling the interaction between his artwork and its environment can be.
