Art Exhibition: Urban & Street Art Showcases

Sticker Art | The third round of the “Oversized & Underpriced” sticker art show started last Friday with a big opening party at Superplan Gallery in Berlin! Again, the world’s greatest sticker-museum Hatch Kingdom shows about 40 large-scale stickers (this time US postal stickers!) customized by some well-known urban artists from around the world, including Base23, Herr von Bias, Emess, Aro One, Flying Förtress and many more! Again, a part of the benefit will be donated to the “Skateistan” project by two Australian, who run a skateboarding school in Afghanistan! For sure I joined the big meet and greet and took some shots - luckily before everything was totally overcrowded… ...

Urban Art Show | As already mentioned in the street art news review, Swiss urban artist Tika recently opened her exhibition, the so called Tikathek, at Skalitzers Gallery in Berlin. Now I found some time to swing by and take a closer look at her latest artworks… Moving back and forward between cities, mediums and textures, TIKA’s works display a unique energy, reflective of her extensive travels and perspectives on todays global society, as well as the nearly forgotten traditions and sagas of the past. Urban Art Exhibition | Yesterday, West Berlin Gallery opened its doors for the opening of the “The Hidden Side” exhibition by French graphic designer, illustrator and fine artist Sebastien Feraut a.k.a Niark1! I joined together with some friends and was impressed by the complexity and explicitly of the paper, canvas and other various mixed media paintings… With a multitude of inspirations, ranging from all kinds of music to create, to 80s horror films, David Lynch, Hayao Miyazaki animations, Francis Bacon, Basquiat, Constructivism, Cubism, graffiti and street art, subcultures, the list is endless, Niark1’s work reflects the pop surrealism of the Low Brow Movement. Fine Art Show | Since last Thursday, brilliant and very colorful artworks by artist and former biochemist Kelsey Brookes from San Diego can be seen at Circleculture Gallery in Berlin. Brookes, who is well-known for his raw and energized style presents his latest “Caped Creatures” works, showing half human, half animal creatures mixed with letters, abstract explosions and neon colors… The creatures become a framework from which the figures anatomy is experimented with. Parts of these chimeras are missing, exaggerated or abstracted beyond functional reality in an effort to relate to the viewer their intense character or predicaments. The loosening of the figure as well as the strong and unique interplay with abstract forms and text, increases the sense of awe and wonder found in Brookes’ signature style. As mentioned before, Herakut’s dirty fine graffiti show called “Happy Doubt-Day” opened four days ago. Campbarbossa visited the show and now there are first impressions from the exhibition online. “Through the strength of their work, coupled with the demand for their style, herakut have moved beyond producing strictly “street art”, and are now regarded as some of the most exciting contemporary artists of our time. Yet they have maintained the respect of the street art community, and they reciprocate that respect by continuing to create with spray cans, even as their artistic sphere of operation has grown to include interior spaces.” (press-release) ...

As you maybe know, Portuguese artist Pedro Matos opened his solo-exhibition called “Reality Show” four days ago in Lisbon. Today he sent in some first photos from the opening evening at Montana Shop & Gallery… In my eyes, Pedro’s style is really mad! I love these dirty backgrounds and the highly detailed portraits in the foreground. It’s a very special combination of quick spray-painting and marker techniques on the one hand and traditional oil and acrylic painting techniques on the other hand. ...

Last Friday, the slightly different street art exhibition by urban artist 1010 opened in Berlin and presents really interesting, strange and minimalistic paper artworks. For about 15 years, 1010 is an active part in Germany’s street art scene. Therefore, the Hamburg-based artist is one of the last still active street art veterans. Although the media he uses ranges from wall paint to paste-ups and paper cuts, you can find similar elements in each of his artworks. ...

Yesterday, the graffiti event “Art Monument” (Turmkunst) started with a lot of hoopla in Berlin. As I mentioned, four of the most well-known urban artists, Honet, Flying Förtress, Sozyone and KR, will repaint with about 2,000 spray-cans the the 2,000m² facade of the old “Bierpinsel”. Inside the tower, artworks by KR, Dave Decat, Dave the Chimp, Form76, Flying Förtress, Honet, Mr. Nonski, Nils Kasiske, Olivier Kosta Théfaine, Poch, Sozyone, Stefan Strumbel and Keramik are shown in a unique “Turmkunst” exhibition. Today is - as I told you - the opening of Carmichael Gallery’s “Re-Creation” urban art exhibition in New York! In addition to Berlin based stencil artist Boxi, also the internationally well-known urban artists Mark Jenkins, Aakash Nihalani, WK Interact and other great contemporary artist like Will Barras, Simon Birch, Ethos, Labrona and Nina Pandolfo will present their artworks. In collaboration with Carmichael Gallery, Ogilvy & Mather New York will host Re-Creation II, a global exploration of emerging art, from March 5th through July 2010.
