Banksy’s subversive stencil work, satirical commentary, anonymous interventions, street art influence, political messaging, and global cultural phenomenon impact contemporary art.
Banksy remains the most enigmatic and influential figure in contemporary street art, transforming urban walls into powerful platforms for political satire and social commentary. This anonymous British artist’s stenciled works combine dark humor with sharp political critique, addressing issues from war and capitalism to surveillance and social inequality.
Banksy’s carefully maintained anonymity has become integral to his artistic identity, allowing the work to speak without the distraction of celebrity culture. His pieces often appear overnight in prominent locations, generating immediate media attention and public discourse.
Banksy’s Antics Roadshow Online!
As already mentioned, British broadcaster Channel4 showed The Antics Roadshow by Banksy last Saturday evening! The hour-long special charted the history of behaving badly in public, from anarchists and activists to attention seeking eccentrics and was in that way a must to watch for all Banksy fans and every guerrilla art enthusiast…
Narrated by Kathy Burke and produced by Jamie D’cruz, The Antics Roadshow examines the stories behind some of the most audacious stunts of recent times and what motivates the perpetrators, from mindless boredom to heartfelt political beliefs.

Graffiti Wars: Banksy vs. Robbo
Ha, right after I posted about Banks’s upcoming Antics Roadshow I spotted another hot program tip for this weekend:
Graffiti Wars is an urban art documentary examining street art and graffiti, and the creative tensions and conflicts within this artistic arena. It’s the story of the ongoing Banksy vs. Robbo battle…Just remember the RIP Street Art exhibition Robbo did last year…
At street level a bitter war is being waged between graffiti writers, street artists and the authorities. While graffiti writers face trial and prison sentences for their art, some street artists’ work is lauded and protected behind Perspex.

Banksy’s Antics Roadshow
All Banksy enthusiasts are able to look forward to The Antics Roadshow made by Banksy himself! This coming Saturday (August 13th, 2011), the British Channel 4 will show Banksy’s incomplete guide to total anarchy, including the greatest hits of wayward behaviour, sedition and sabotage…
Basically I just thought it was a good name for a TV programme and I’ve been working back from there. (Banksy)
The hour-long special charts the history of behaving badly in public, from anarchists and activists to attention seeking eccentrics, presenting for example Michael Fagan talking about breaking into the Queen’s bedroom or Noel Godin, who pioneered attacking celebrities with custard pies.

Urban Art Recap, July 2011
To give you a short overview about what happened in the last month and to feature some great stories a second time, I thought it would be a nice idea to recap the five top stories (with the highest count of visitors) at the end of every month. Here are the five top stories of July 2011:

ATO: New Banksy or Best Street Artist ever?
Moscow-based art collective Faceheads just meet up with Russian probably the best street artist ever, who sometimes is named the new Banksy - His name: ATO!
The special thing about ATO is that he creates beautiful street artworks without having any noticeable concept - A fact, a lot of other street artists should also keep in mind as not to get too conceptual with their street art.
Worldwide Street Artists: Banksy, ATO, Brainwash - Not sure what to believe? Then you definitely should read our Street Artist Interviews!

Banksy of Bulgaria
I just stumbled upon this interesting intervention in Sofia, Bulgaria: An still unknown artist - dubbed Banksy of Bulgaria by some news agencies - transformed figures of Soviet soldiers at the base of the Soviet Army monument into superheroes and cartoon characters!
The Joker, Superman, Santa Claus, Robin (not quite sure) and even Ronald McDonald carrying the Stars and Stripes could be identified - I’m not sure about the figures, maybe you are able to name some more… However, in my eyes this guerrilla art action is just superb! The transformation of Soviet soldiers into fantasy characters and in that way the combination of modern US culture and Soviet history is what some may missed in the original Banksy’s latest artworks.

Bristol Weekend-Trip
City Trip | Hey folks, I’m just back from the nice British west coast city of Bristol! After some sunny days with greasy food and a lot of beer I’m glad about being back in Berlin fuckin’ town!
Although Bristol is, compared to other cities I visited so far, quite small, it’s good enough for a weekend-trip especially because the routes are short and therefore everything is within walking distance…

Mr. Brainwash Gets Protection
Street Art Protection | For some time now, there’s a more or less big discussion running around the world, why street artworks should be protected, who decides which one is worth protecting. After everybody’s darling and super-duper street art hero Banksy, we now have another artist (?) whose works moved up the ladder and are now worth protecting…
As the Melrose & Fairfax blog for street art in Los Angeles wrote, it’s no one else than Mr. Brainwash whose street artworks are getting protected with plexiglass!

How to sell a Banksy?!
Art Market Documentary | “WTF? Another Banksy documentary?”, was what I thought when I recently stumbled upon “How to sell a Banksy”! But after I watched the trailer and read the synopsis I became aware, that this film is not about Bansky, but about the crazy institution of the international art market…
Banksy’s work now reportedly changes hands for millions. But he puts up his street art for free. Have you ever wondered what would happen if you got your hands on one of these? Does it mean you’ve found a winning lottery ticket or just scraped some worthless crap off a wall?
