Berlin’s street art scene flourishes through historic rebellion, diverse artistic communities, and iconic locations like East Side Gallery transforming urban landscapes.
Berlin stands as one of the world’s most important street art capitals, with a vibrant scene rooted in the city’s history of political rebellion, cultural transformation, and artistic freedom. The fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989 created unprecedented opportunities for artistic expression on vacant buildings and abandoned spaces throughout the reunified city.
The iconic East Side Gallery, featuring murals painted directly on remaining Wall sections, symbolizes Berlin’s transformation from divided city to unified cultural center. Neighborhoods like Kreuzberg, Friedrichshain, and Mitte showcase diverse artistic styles from traditional graffiti writing to large-scale murals, stencil art, and experimental installations.
Street Art 3.0: Mentalgassi in Berlin
Yes, it’s a commercial work, but nevertheless it’s really amazing! The Berlin-based street art crew Mentalgassi did a nice job at the Alexanderplatz in the heart of Berlin. They created so-called “Flip-Images”, large-scale image-installations which make it possible for the public to see different images from different perspectives.
Mentalgassi are well-known for their oversized paste-ups, showing expressive, crazy faces of their friends. In the past, they also experimented with concrete, stickers and X-films, self-sticking color transparencies, for the ticket validators on the Berlin subway-stations.

Turmkunst: News from the Art Monument?
Yesterday I had some time to visit the “Art Monument” (Turmkunst) tower again. There isn’t much to see yet, but Flying Förtress, who will paint the facade until April 15, has still some time to finish his work.
Nevertheless I took some shots of the tower’s basket including Flying Förtress and the one new grounded tower facade. This weekend, I will go back and bring you some new impressions of the nice exhibition inside the fascinating tower and some photos of the facade updates.

Art Monument Berlin Cancelled
Actually the urban art event “Art Monument” (Turmkunst) should take place in Berlin today at 2pm, but unfortunately the organizers had to cancel it…
As you maybe noticed, Ralf Schüler and Ursulina Schüler-Witte, the architects of the “Bierpinsel” tower, which should be repainted by the four famous graffiti artists Honet, Flying Förtress, KR and Sozyone, brought an action against the event.
In their opinion the contemporary repainting of the tower by graffiti artists is incompatible to the futuristic architecture of the 70th. (Several German newspapers wrote about the dispute…)

Traceless Graffiti: TOFA’s Light-Writing
Often, light-writing or light-graffiti is also described as traceless graffiti. There are several articles about that relative new art form, which combines the style and motion sequences from the traditional graffiti with the technical knowledge of photography, in my archives…
One of the protagonists of light-writing in Berlin is Chris Noelle aka TOFA, who is visual jockey (VJ) in real life, initiator of the “Light-Write Festival”, which took place in Berlin in 2009, and responsible for the creative design at the well-known Tresor club in Berlin.

Urban Photobook: Pieces of Berlin
“Pieces of Berlin” is the name of a nice photobook about Berlin. On 90 pages, the book shows with 30 color photos some unconventional views of Berlin, the city of abandoned houses and street art, and therefore the real beauty and variety.
The book is composed of analog street photographs by Florian Reischauer and texts by Isobel Coquille and - because of the great success - actually available in its second edition.

Adidas Urban Art Guide Hamburg
The Adidas Urban Art Guide is an iPhone application which makes it possible for you to find interesting street art spots. It’s like an interactive city art guide and started with a urban shoe rallye in Berlin one year ago. Back then, about 50 street artists, including Emess, Evol, Klub7, Pisa73 and Mymo, hijacked the release with their Dirty Dancing Sneaker Action. Now the service will also be available in Hamburg!
“The city is a gallery. The adidas Urban Art Guide is the catalog. When Urban Art entered the scene, art left the galleries. Their characters populate the whole urban landscape. Especially in a young and international city like Berlin they follows us at every turn like a second population.

Urban Portraiture: Pabo Art Show
Pabo (…) isn’t the first street artist who represents pop culture icons- but rather for technique. He makes pencil drawing portrays, crowded with signs, with the pale and subtle colours of crayons and of ballpoint pen scratches.
Famous ghosts, in absolutely classic style. Jimi Hendrix, baron jacket and maudit neckwear, becomes an alchemist, lighted by acid glares, with strong and tender features like the boys of Caravaggio. Hendrix, in the triptych in which he appears, is flanked by a preacher, Martin Luther King, and a dancer, Cassius Clay. (press release)
