Clemens Behr: Exploring the World of Urban Art

Urban Multimedia Art The Solution Is Irrelevant, is meant to evoke not only an approach to creativity and the act of creating, but also a life philosophy. For the duration of the vernissage, the Epicentro Artspace will be transformed into a multimedia, interdisciplinary laboratory, where performance and video art, design, music, spoken word, sound treatment, sculpture, painting, and installations will interact simultaneously without a screenplay or a preset agenda. On board for the experiment: the 44flavours art collective, installation artist Clemens Behr, film directors Pol Ponsarnau and Yves Kasten, musicians Robot Koch, Sneaky and Lars Kirchbach, and spoken word artist RQM. The entire “performance” will be documented on video and will be screened at Epicentro art daily; presented in the form of video installations alongside other finished artifacts. ...

The Art and Pass project recently caught up with abstract urban artist Clemens Behr and let him talk about ome of his influences… Art and Pass is a collaborative artistic project formed by 18 artists of different nationalities, mixing emerging artists with established ones, as well as their diverse techniques and materials. The artists are challenged with an exercise that will make them explore and question the concepts of inspiration, appropriation and original creation. Inspired by the creative process of Mail Art, Art and Pass produces an artistic flow that travels geographically and conceptually. Popular urban artist Clemens Behr and graphic designer Raby Florence Fofana teamed up not long ago and together created a subway sculpture for Berlin’s probably most famous subway line U1! The so-called U1 Objekt is a two meters tall sculpture on wheels built out of wood and aluminium plates. The plates have been screenprinted with pattern-designs by Raby which where afterwards arranged and screwed together by Clemens… This Berlin subway sculpture is not just adding another part to Clemens Behr’s Places and Spaces series, but also objectifies the look and feel of a well-known means of local transport. Wow, this urban artists collaboration between urban design crew 44flavours and our personal hero, 3D cardboard installer Clemens Behr is like really hot sauce dripping through these rough beats of the same video… The urban illustration duo as well as Clemens (I decided to put him on my top urban artists list!) are both part of a certain new urban artists generation in Berlin, pushing forward new styles, and spreading especially their love for mixed media artworks. Back in 2011, German urban artist Clemens Behr caught up with French painter Romain Froquet in Paris to create a phenomenal collaboration installation - and when I say phenomenal, I mean it! Bringing together Clemens’ abstract, somehow digital-looking three-dimensional installations and Romain’s complex styled, abstract paintings, both artists created different, sometimes floating artworks in an old fabric using nothing more than cardboard, wood, yarn and paint… It’s great to see how the two different techniques work out together - thumbs up guys! ...

2011 was a really successful year for German urban artist Clemens Behr who not just explored urban places and spaces around the world by creating amazing cardboard installations in public space, but also exhibited in Berlin, his adoptive home! Exploring urban places… Clemens loves working with recycled materials and basic geometric forms. Organised by Ironside, the two Berlin-based urban artists Buff Diss and Clemens Behr created a nice cardboard and tape art installation for the urban art x-mas market Stattmarkt which took place in the Stattbad Berlin rooms during the last two days… I bumped into them during the setup on Friday and took some quick shots of both preparing their collaboration installation. In my eyes, the Australian street art veteran and the talented student from the renown Berlin University of the Arts are an urban art dream-team due to the fact, that their preferred materials (cardboard and wood vs. tape) and styles (3D installations vs. 2D tape art) complement each other ! ...

Last Friday, Berlin’s Neurotitan Gallery opened its doors for another nice group-exhibition entitled Simple is Rare, presenting diverse artwork by different urban-inspired artists like Herr Orm, K 110 and Robert Matzke, just to name a few… Although or probably because of this exhibition’s major topic was simplicity, it was the huge and very complex installation by Clemens Behr which dominated the show-room. By combining cardboard, tape, neon light, paint and wood his walkable and impressing tunnel-like architecture draw almost my entire attention. Bringing together several talented, young urban artists like Clemens Behr, the Berliner Neurotitan Gallery is opening the weekend with the big Simple is Rare group-show tonight! The doors will open at 8 and I’m pretty sure that this exhibition, which examines simplicity in urban arts, is definitely worth to get on your feet, grab your friends, a few beers and to join the opening ceremony asap. My friend, Berlin-based urban artist Clemens Behr recently updated his website and added some neat photos of his latest cardboard installations from Amiens, Paris, Berlin, Vienna and Malmo and again - after these dope installations in New York and Barcelona - I’m highly impressed about what’s possible to create by simply using cardboard, tape, wood and paint… Behr has taken his work into the public sphere, building peculiar appendages in metro cars and erecting detailed miniature cities on street corners.
