Gallery: Urban Art, Graffiti & Street Art Shows

When I arrived back in Berlin two days ago, it unfortunately was to late to visit the exhibition opening by Ciscoksl and Fafa at ATM Gallery. For that reason, I took some time to look the graffiti meets fine art show yesterday. “Ciscoksl and Fafa are two Urban Artists who are connected in many ways, though their artistic approach and expression are very different. Both come from the Iberian Peninsula, both startet to paint in the streets in 1997 and both managed to draw their graffiti experience on canvas in a way that has the appeal of contemporay fine art.” (press release) ...

Pabo (…) isn’t the first street artist who represents pop culture icons- but rather for technique. He makes pencil drawing portrays, crowded with signs, with the pale and subtle colours of crayons and of ballpoint pen scratches. Famous ghosts, in absolutely classic style. Jimi Hendrix, baron jacket and maudit neckwear, becomes an alchemist, lighted by acid glares, with strong and tender features like the boys of Caravaggio. Yesterday evening, the urban illustration exhibition “Catharsis Impossible” by Gogoplata started at the ATM Gallery in Berlin. I visited the well-frequented opening and took some shots of these really grandiose and amusing artworks! Growing up in Berlin the comic book enthusiast Gogoplata taught himself the craft of drawing early on. On the streets of Berlin he developed his skills as a graffiti artist for years while at the same time working as a professional cartoon designer and animator. (ATM) ...

Niels “Shoe” Meulman from Amsterdam has worked on perfect his dirty styled combination of calligraphy and graffit. Next month he releases his new book “Calligraffiti” on From Here to Fame Publishing. “Street-edge meets high-end design as artist Niels Meulman explores the contours of words as images in “Calligraffiti” - his hybrid art form which blends calligraphy and graffiti. He presents a wonderful interplay of contrasts with a series of fast phrases and upbeat witticisms in the form of captivating typographic masterpieces.” (press release) ...

I already posted some impressions of the Faile and Bast collaboration exhibition by Ian Cox at Lazarides Gallery. Today I have some moving pictures from the show for you! Babelgum visited the making of “Deluxx Fluxx Arcade 2010” and filmed Faile and Bast while their preparations. The huge count of posters pasted on the walls combined with black light and luminous colors looks phenomenal and also the special designed game machines are really phantastic! Please, give me one of those arcade games… ...

The flagship-gallery for street art in Berlin is the ATM Gallery by my friend Marc Scherer. Although or even because of it’s only a small exhibition-room, the gallery shows continuously the local and international creme de la creme of urban art and culture. At the end of this month, ATM will travel with a lot of great stencil artworks, photographs and paintings by Just, Emess, Eliot, Artiste Ouvrier, Dave the Chimp, Leon Raid and Prost to Vienna for the “Rock me ATM!” exhibition at Inoperable. ...

This Saturday, a new urban art gallery with a pretty cool concept will open in Berlin - Its name: 72h Gallery. The exhibiting artists have 36 hours for preparing their artwork. That mean 36 hours to create, spray, tinker, photograph, shoot, screw, hang, rock, be awake and paint. Ongoing the public is able to visit, view, fall in love, jaw, hear, feel and enjoy for exactly 36 hours. All in all it’s always an 72 hours action exhibition. ...

Yesterday I got an e-mail by Samantha Longhi. She is the founder of “Stencil History X” and the author of the corresponding stencil art book and informed me about the upcoming exhibition by famous graffiti artist Roa in Paris! Roa’s urban art shows are very rare and this is his first solo exhibition in Paris. After distinguished journeys in the streets of New York, London, Berlin and Warsaw in 2009, he now takes possession of the French capital. ...

Recently I read an article about the “Neon Sign Boneyard” in Las Vegas written by my friend Bigod, who found a very interesting photo-album about it on Flickr. “The Neon Sign Boneyard in Las Vegas. Here you find the old neon signs that were outside casinos that have long since gone. The boneyard is a fantastic commentary on the culture and architecture of Las Vegas from its early days in the 1920’s to today.” (arZan) ...

Yippieh, 2010 will start with an extravagant street art show! The five most well-known Berlin-based stencil artists - Bohomaz, Czarnobyl, Emess, Evol and Pisa73 - will exhibit together in the Neurotitan Gallery. That very special and rare group-exhibition will be the first urban art highlight in the upcoming year. I’m so happy, ’cause for me stencil art is very important. My interests in street and urban art were stimulated by it and my first steps in being a part of the urban art scene were planning, cutting and spraying stencils. ...
