Evol in London

Evol in London

The godfather of detailed urban interior stencil artworks Evol recently finished his (probably first) piece in London! Being in the British capital for a big Christmas show with Pictures on Walls, Evol just left a first mark and spray painted a couple of concrete barricades near Smithfield Market. Again he created a incredible microcosms, including nice hand-finished miniature tags and pieces on his internationally well-known facade-stencils and again it’s just great to see another finished artwork by him. ...

Buff Diss, Something from Nothing London

Buff Diss, Something from Nothing London

Looks like, famous Australian tape artist Buff Diss can’t stop. After setting up a new, first blog and hanging around in Taipei for a couple of weeks, he not just found some time to talk with the Stylesight team but also to tape London’s Village Underground for the Make Something from Nothing art event! I draw with tape. I used to do graffiti and think one of the things I’ve learnt over the last few years is how much I hate paint. (Buff Diss) ...

Creating like a Pro, Urban Art Photography

Creating like a Pro, Urban Art Photography

During the last couple of days, when I stayed at home because of some flu stuff, I was browsing through my digital photo-archive and came up with a neat idea for a new urban art related photo-series, focusing not on the artists, but on their tools and equipment! I ended up with a great collection of photos showing spray cans, brushes, paint buckets, masking tape, markers, gloves, even more cans, fire-extinguishers, and everything else a street or graffiti artist probably needs… The name of this new photography project: Urban Tools - Creating like a Pro. ...

Stephen Hiam’s Chaos Painting Machine

Stephen Hiam’s Chaos Painting Machine

Today I’d like to introduce a graffiti-inspired artist to you, I recently discovered… Born in London and living in Berlin, Stephen Hiam experiments with spray-paint and chaos and creates in that way crazy abstract artworks. After constructing different drip machines from simple everyday objects, like tin cans, he recently got a Makita BBX7600 (a 4-stroke commercial duty engine) and transformed it into what I would call a semi-automatic paint-vomitter and what he calls an aerosol organsm! ...

The Art of Hacking

The Art of Hacking

Somehow corresponding to the war on Mexico declaration by loosely linked hacking group Anonymous I have some interesting news for everyone being interested in hacking… Due to the amazing success, the Netherlands Media Art Institute extended its The Art of Hacking exhibition, which focuses on the artistic side of hacking, until November 26th, showing works by Heath Bunting, The Yes Men, Übermorgen.com and others. As it is written in the press-release, the artists in this exhibition highlight the imperfections of our surroundings and daily lives. The projects subvert, improve on or circumnavigate official systems and practices and offer alternatives. Superficially, hacking is often associated with spreading online viruses and other digital attacks. Officially these criminal activities are not really known as hacking, but as cracking. The real practice of hacking is done based on far more positive and artistic motives. It’s a state of mind and there are elaborate ethical codes within the hacker community. ...

London’s Most Public Gallery

London’s Most Public Gallery

After I wrote about the Style Wars rescue, I just stumbled upon another urban art related Kickstarter project: The Wall - London’s Most Public Gallery is public art project whose aim is to transform the well-known brick facade of London’s Village Underground (that’s the wall where I photographed Herakut, Titi Freak and others…) into an permanent art space including bullet proof metal and glass frames to protect the art work from theft and vandalism… ...

Triumph & Tragedy: Revok in Hamburg

Triumph & Tragedy: Revok in Hamburg

Big news for all writers, graffiti enthusiasts and vandals: Famous writer and graffiti artist Revok is going to open his first solo-show in Germany at Hamburg’s Vicious Gallery! Bringing together triumph and tragedy (that’s the title of the show), the Los Angeles based urban artist seems to present artworks based on found objects taken from the ruins of Detroit… As the found materials, also Revok’s history represents triumph and tragedy at the same time. Having one of his major successes by being part of this year’s Art in the Streets exhibit at LA’s Museum of Contemporary Art, he was sentenced to 180 days in jail by a judge a short while after the opening. For that reason, I think Revok’s Hamburg exhibition will include some highly personal artworks showing a mixture of great success but also downfall. ...

Voina Protest In Prague

Voina Protest In Prague

The anti-establishment Voina art collective, notorious for painting a 65-meter penis on a St. Petersburg drawbridge, is bringing their latest protest to cities throughout Europe. The group today displayed a massive photograph of one of their members on Prague’s Charles Bridge to protest the charges against him in Russia* as Radio Free Europe recently reported. It’s another sign against the criminalization of artists, dissidents and political activists in Russia. Watch the interviews with Voina members Yana Sarna and Aleksei Plutser-Sarno to get the whole story!

Style Wars, The Outtakes

Style Wars, The Outtakes

Henry Chalfant and Tony Silver have a problem: The original Style Wars outtakes footage is damaged and fading. And although with costs around 28,000 USD it’s really expensive there still is a chance to save the unique footage! Style Wars is considered the indispensable document of New York Street culture of the early ’80s, the record on film of a golden age of youthful creativity that exploded into the world from a city in crisis. ...
