Tagging Culture in Berlin

Tagging Culture in Berlin

Readers of this urban art blog should already noticed the Skalitzers Gallery in Berlin, where for example the Cope2 and the Babou, L’Atlas, Sun7 and Tanc exhibitions took already place. Skalitzers is a new contemporary art gallery located in Berlin, with an international focus on new artists and art forms. (Skalitzers) Recently the “Finding Berlin” project visited the gallery and its owner to talk about graffiti and tagging culture in Berlin and of course about the idea behind Skalitzers. The final result is an nice, but unfortunately short video interview, including some interesting statements about the feeling on the streets in Berlin…I guess, when I’m back in Berlin I will pay a visit to corresponding tagging shop! ...

Woollen Art: Spider Tags

Woollen Art: Spider Tags

Some month ago I already wrote about about the Spanish street art crew La Pluma Eléctri*k - Back then, they created a lot of interesting QR code paste-ups! Today they sent me new info about and some photos of their latest urban art project, which is called “Spider Tags”… “Spider Tags” are woollen artworks, often made of some nails and just a cotton thread, which makes it possible to create strict line and in that way complex geometrically shapes. ...

London’s Abandoned Tube Stations

London’s Abandoned Tube Stations

As you maybe know, I’m currently in London and still searching for great urban things I haven’t seen or visited yet, like that crazy underground skatepark close to London Bridge station. Today I found a nice hint on one of my favourite blogs Ektopia: Abandoned tube stations in London! There are apparently some interesting abandoned tube stations in the British capital. One of the least well-known or visited disused stations is St Mary’s in East London - Recently the BBC did a small tour inside the station! It looks rather old and less frequented by graffiti artists, what is really incomprehensibly for me… ...

Zezão - Urban Art of São Paulo

Zezão - Urban Art of São Paulo

Some days ago, I received an e-mail by Sabine Willig who seems to be a representative of the Choque Cultural Gallery in São Paulo, which is “a contemporary art gallery exhibiting pop, outsider art.” She informed me about an amazing exhibition which takes place in the three floors of the gallery… One of the most famous São Paulo based urban artists José Amaro Capela, who is also known as Zezão, is currently exhibiting at Choque Cultural! The name of the really beautiful looking art show is “Vari Ações Urbanas”, which means “Various Urban Actions” and presents collages of up to 1,85 x 1,90 m size as well as paintings on wood, paper, canvas and the rusty surfaces… ...

Fine Stencil Art: C215’s Midnight Dreams

Fine Stencil Art: C215’s Midnight Dreams

For one week now, the “Midnight Dreams” stencil exhibition by French urban artist C215 is running in London’s Signal Gallery and it seems to be a great one! C215, whose latest exhibition took place in Paris, is well-known for his amazing, highly detailed stencil artworks he put up around the world. By the way, some month ago he gave me an nice interview… Midnight Dreams will be C215’s second solo show with us at Signal. In the show, the artist is moving away from reproducing works whose origins are on the street. He is developing a style that has more fantasy and independent imaginative force. Inspired by colourful memories from his childhood in Orleans, the work that will be shown will retain the fabulous use of intricate stencil work, with a freshness, lightness of touch and brilliant use of colour, that has not been appropriate in his street work to date. Zosen - System Collapse in the UK

Zosen - System Collapse in the UK

Wow, what a day…Today the next Urban Artcore milestone begun: Three month in London! And I already have good news for all the urban art enthusiasts who are also currently in London: Zosen, a well-known street artist from Barcelona, who visited Berlin in 2009, brings not anarchy but “System Collapse” (his premier UK solo show) to the StolenSpace Gallery! System Collapse is a colourful vision of the world around us and an incisive commentary on the current state of the world’s economy. The distinctive lettering styles, loosely influenced by the artwork of the punk and the do-it-yourself movements of the 70’s - 80’s, the illusory characters and bright, pure colours reflect a hopeful optimism while the meanings of the words, real and conceived, provide a complex context for a creative discharge of conscience. Emess & Czarnobyl Live - United Colours

The last weekend was marked by the “United Colours” street art festival, which takes place in Berlin for the first time.
