Apple iPad Ad-Busting

Since Apple is bigger than Microsoft - Yes, it’s true! If you don’t believe, read the newspaper. - and not any longer the small, design-focused computer and software forge, Steve Jobs’ company becomes more and more disliked. In Berlin, recently some ads for Apple’s new flagship, the iPad, were busted. Steve Jobs offers iPad users freedom from porn. And yet the iPads’ measures will offer an unprecedented porn experience. Landform Typography

Landform Typography

After the typography-inspired bookshelf by Pieter de Leeuw and the great “Type the Sky” photos by Lisa Rienermann I will show you another alternative typography project, which is called Google Maps Typography… Creative director Rhett Dashwood, who is interested in creative media, including interactive, animation, branding, print, film making and digital art, was a bit bored in October 2008 and started for this reason to search for some letter-like landmarks and buildings in Google Maps. When he finished seven month later, in April 2009, he had created his own bird’s-eye perspective landform typography alphabet…fantastic, isn’t it? ...

Mural Art: Blu, Sam3 & Os Gêmeos in Lisbon

Mural Art: Blu, Sam3 & Os Gêmeos in Lisbon

It’s an amazing huge painting, four of my favorite mural artists recently created in Lisbon! Os Gêmeos, whose graffiti art exhibition is still running, Blu, who was lately in Wroclaw and Sam3, whose new book was published several month ago, came together to paint the facade of two abandoned old houses in Lisbon’s city. All four artists - for those of you who are new: Os Gêmeos are twins - are internationally well-known for their unique style, beautiful artworks and large-scale mural artworks. For this reason it’s just breathtaking to see them painting together. Additionally it is - like every time - incredible to see how they manage it to paint those huge artworks… ...

Action Figures: Banksy, Hirst & Ron English!

Action Figures: Banksy, Hirst & Ron English!

It’s unbelievable! While clicking through one of my favorite German art and design blogs, I found out that there are some really crazy things going on in the international action figures world… Urban Art Action Figures US artist Mike Leavitt, whose interests are fine craft, sculpture, portraits, painting, performance, education, architecture, and animation, created Action Figures of Damien Hirst, Ron English and famous street artist Banksy! Leavitt’s Art Army toys are hand-made one-off toys depicting the surly band of marauders that’ll one day take over the earth. Spanning a range of historical subjects from Van Gogh to Tupac, Leavitt has stop-motion animated the articulating figures into movie shorts. (about Mike Leavitt) ...

Wood Typography: Read the Trees!

Wood Typography: Read the Trees!

Since I asked whether “Back to the Roots” is a new trend in design and urban art, I was still on the search for some example which underline my theory. Recently I found something interesting on a blog of one of my commentators… Wood meets Typography In 2009, the british graphic design company Why not Associates recently created so called typographic tree columns in collaboration with Gordon Young, a visual artist who focuses on creating art for the public domain. If you like words and nature, I guess you will love this great wood typography! ...

Herakut Graffiti - Dirty Fine Art Show

Herakut Graffiti - Dirty Fine Art Show

This June will be hot! It’s not only the release month of Martha Cooper’s new Name Tagging book, but the month of Herakut’s first solo show on their home turf in Germany, called Unhappy Doubt-Day. Herakut Graffiti Works The urban art show, including most recent dirty fine graffiti artworks by the Herakut duo, will be presented by Galerie Springmann.Varol, which is currently showing JR’s “Women are Heros”! For me, Herakut’s way of creating artworks is fascinating. After I visited their live painting last year, I’m a big fan of that interaction between dirty colors and drips and the amazing detailed appearance. I think the art show will be - like the Os Gêmeos graffiti show - very interesting not only for graffiti lovers, but for contemporary art fans! ...

Intervention: Ghostbusters in New York!

Intervention: Ghostbusters in New York!

Because of a handful of ghosts, the New York Public Library had to be cleaned by the Ghostbusters. Fortunately nobody of the present students and other intellectuals was injured - only one guy reported that one ghost tried to take possession of him… Yes, that’s a joke! That nice Ghostbusters intervention was planned and realized by the Improv Everywhere team which is also responsible for the No Pants subway ride… For our latest mission, we brought the movie Ghostbusters to life in the reading room of The New York Public Library at 42 Street. The 1984 movie begins with a scene in the very same room, so we figured it was time for the Ghostbusters to make an encore appearance. (Who You Gonna Call?) ...

Carnival of Cultures Berlin - Photo Report

Carnival of Cultures Berlin - Photo Report

What an amazing spectacle and what a cheerful atmosphere - Germany’s capital is in a state of emergency, because of the fifteenth Carnival of Cultures Berlin! About half a million people are on the streets to catch a glimpse at the 4.500 dancers, actors and musicians who party the city and its multiculturalism… Carnival of Cultures - Karneval der Kulturen The idea of a carnival which presents the cultural and ethnic diversity of Berlin was developed in 1995, i.e. at a time when – as a consequence to the political and economic changes since the fall of the Berlin Wall and the unification of the two German states – a lot of social, economic and cultural changes happened. Due to these changes, to the economic decline of Berlin and the different economic levels and social and cultural experiences of people in East and West Berlin, social conflicts became more evident and even increased. This state of change resulted, among other things, in a biased and prejudiced view on immigration, which was reflected in the public discussion. (about Carnival of Cultures) ...

Graffiti Documentary: Graffiti is Freedom?

Graffiti Documentary: Graffiti is Freedom?

Before I will write something about that interesting graffiti documentary called “Getting Up”, I would like congratulate the team of F.C. Internazionale Milano for their great football match and for that nice result. Thumbs up, guys! Getting Up (Yeah, I know its from 2008, but it’s still in fashion!) is not that standard graffiti documentary which only describes the history of the worldwide graffiti movement, but it makes several famous writers and major players from the United States like Daze, Cope2, Ket, Futura and Noxer come to word - They more or less discuss their fight for fame. ...
