Abandoned Street Art: Rero’s Messages

I was really flashed, when I saw the photos of Rero’s great new text-message artworks in an abandoned hospital somewhere in Paris yesterday on Ekosystem! Rero is a conceptual artist with a graffiti background, although the only similarity between graffiti and his artworks is that both can be seen on the streets. He calls his very minimalistic and simple style “Image Negation”, which is a reversion of the rules of classical illustration: ...

Graffiti Fine-Art: Futura 2000

Beyond doubt, Futura 2000 ranks among my favorite graffiti-artists. His old style made him famous - his new style is clear and modern. Born in 1955, Futura started to paint illegally on New York’s subway in the early seventies. He earned a lot of fame and exhibited together with other popular artists like Keith Haring in the eighties. ...

Post-War Modernity: Architecture Photography

Daniel Sebastian Schaub is a freelance artist and photographer, who is concerned with architecture of the post-war modernity. In the last years, he photographed hundreds of different buildings mainly in Hamburg and Berlin and creates in this way a fascinating documentation of post-war architecture! The title of his work “Transformationsfelder” could be translated with “Transformation-Fields”. It tries to recognize the building’s character and focuses not only on single architectural components but on the whole building. ...

Urban Hacks: The Urban Guide for Alternate Use

Scott Burnham, a creative director, writer and consultant who is specialized in design, urbanism and open source methodologies, has recently created his “Urban Guide for Alternate Use” for the upcoming, brand-new and Europe-wide “Exchange Radical Moments” live art festival. It’s an open source city-specific field guide for alternate uses for existing urban infrastructure. As Burnham wrote on his website, he “wanted to create a platform for exchange of ideas for alternate urban solutions based on existing structures and systems.” ...

Banksy - Street Art Movie

Banksy - Street Art Movie

On march the fifth, Banksy will be with you! As BBC wrote today, a brilliant street art film will come to the cinemas in Great Britain. It’s a film about a world without rules, where one man broke them all. It’s a Banksy film! It’s called Exit Through The Gift Shop. The film is billed as the world’s first street art disaster movie. For this reason, it looks like a film of a man who wanted to film Banksy but failed. Nevertheless there are a lot of famous urban artists, like Shepard Fairey, in the movie. I’m very curious to see the film. Here is a excerpt of the BBC’s article: ...

Graffiti meets Cars: “Wash Me” Book

At the beginning of the year, I wrote an article about the creative celebration of Mini’s 50th birthday. The car-manufacturer invited ten well-known artists, including urban artists like Seak One, Tika and Smash137 to repaint some of their cars. Some days ago, I received a package from BMW Switzerland (the owner of Mini) with some of the corresponding “Wash Me” books in it! For that reason, I will give away three of these books to you today! All you have to do is to twitter a link to this article up to and including January 22nd, 8pm. Please, don’t forget to mention me (@berlinpiraten), otherwise I’m not able to find out who participates and who not… Tomorrow evening I will randomly decide three of you who will get the books for free. ...

Urban Event: No Pants Subway Ride

Two weeks ago, I informed you about this years “No Pants Subway Ride”. It’s an urban mega-event, organized by the Improv Everywhere crew. Now there is a great official documentary video online! I think, it was a great action and the people had a lot of fun… “On Sunday, January 10th, 2010 over 5,000 people took off their pants on subways in 44 cities around the world. In New York, the 9th Annual No Pants Subway Ride had over 3,000 participants, spread out over six meeting points and ten subway lines.” (Improv Everywhere) ...

Urban Interventions - The Book

Urban interventions are - in addition to graffiti and classical street art - my main topic and I think the majority of you has also a partiality for it. For that reason, I will present you a new book, called “Urban Interventions - Personal Projects in Public Places”… “Evolving from graffiti and street art, urban interventions are the next generation of artwork to hit public space. Using any and all of the components that make up urban and rural landscapes, these mostly spatial interventions bring art to the masses. ...

Urban Art Movie: Inside Outside

Today, I got a nice e-mail from Claire from the online video platform Babelgum. She wrote about the online premier of the great urban art movie “Inside Outside” by Andreas Johnsen and Nis Boye Møller Rasmussen from Denmark. “Inside Outside follows artists from New York, Stockholm, Copenhagen and Sao Paulo who blur the lines between legal and illegal art, making a living through engaging with the commercial art world, but still thriving on the energy of working in the street. ...
