Painting Walls: Graffiti, Street Art & Urban Art

Urban Art | Seems to be quite cold over there in the Russian city of Yekaterinburg at the moment! Nevertheless, the famous urban art duo Herakut hit the streets of this snowbound city and created, by assistance of the neighborhood kids, another huge mural in their well-known style of rough street-influenced lines and photo-realistic details… Although I didn’t master the Russian language, I somehow understood (by the help of a famous translation tool) that this mural was painted on a wall of the local protectory for children and that the corresponding documentation is part of an upcoming documentary about this children’s home, which is called “Our House”! ...

Urban Art News | Because I just started my Master studies, I didn’t had the time to write posts about all these smaller stories which happened in the last week. Urban Painting | Portuguese-French urban artist Nuno de Matos aka Matox (not to be confused with Pedro Matos!) won this year’s Urban Award for painting, for what reason I had the chance to take a closer look at his brilliant abstract calligraphy paintings in Berlin! Nuno de Matos is inspired by art from wide variety of periods in human development: all the way from the days of cave-paintings to the scrawling street art of our fast-paced contemporary society. Urban Art Show | As already mentioned in the street art news review, Swiss urban artist Tika recently opened her exhibition, the so called Tikathek, at Skalitzers Gallery in Berlin. Spanish Mural Art | He collaborated with famous graffiti artist Smash137, has been a part of the “Art Brut” graffiti festival and painted his own concrete wall at the end of last year! Sure, I’m talking about Spanish urban artist Aryz, who becomes more and more popular these days… Recently I found another video from 2009 showing him spray-painting a beautiful indoor mural in the “Montana Coffee & Pizza” shop in Barcelona! Again I’m totally impressed by his technique, style and colors! I’m pretty sure we will get a lot to see of his art this year - We should be excited. ...

A lot of reknown urban artist, like Herakut, El Mac, Augustine Kofie and Remi/Rough already painted live in Jaybo’s Project Room in Berlin. Now, the master himself invited to watch him paint at the Soto Berlin shop. He painted simultaneously three artworks in front of an audience. Unfortunately I missed this event, so I have no new “Urban Artist in Action” shots for you… Nevertheless, Jaybo’s live painting was recorded and for that reason there is this really nice short video online. Urban Painting | Just minutes ago I stumbled upon the fantastic murals - or more general urban paintings - by Paris-based urban artist Popof. Until now I’d never heard about the Moscow-born son of an Russian journalist and dissident, who came in contact with graffiti in 1989 and found his way to the French capital. But I have to say when I saw his latest project called “Sillons” (English furrows) first, I was impressed. These abstract urban lines he creates are so simple, but the effect is awesome! ...

Light Art | You know, I really like light artworks, because of their instability. After these beautiful light art performance photos I have again some light art today. Marko from France recently informed me about his amazing light-paintings he did earlier this year in Kazakhstan. He combines nice light patterns and typography influences, which looks really great. Graffiti Art Exhibition | The master of flying colors, Morten Andersen will open his first solo-show in Berlin in a few days! No, he’s not a former National Football League kicker, but a high skilled graffiti fine artist from Denmark. He started tagging back in 1989.
