Paper Art: Explore the World of Intricate Paper Creations

The Berlin-based Redspective label is currently showing amazing typography posters and prints by the two urban and typography artists Otto Baum (Klub7) and Sven Neitzel (Nepomuk)! Dot per Dot is a collaborative project between Otto Baum and Sven Neitzel focusing on blurring the border between illustration and graphic de sign. The two designers use self-made type faces and playful drawings in order to attempt to shift these borders. It was the aim of the two designers to interpret old gra phic forms and create a new approach to design. The exhibtion will also include older works from the artists past 2 years. What an amazing weather! The sun is everywhere, it is hot and I had some time to walk through Berlin-Kreuzberg for taking some photos of Berlin’s summer street art. Today I decided twelve of them to give you a nice insight into what happens on the streets in Germany’s capital. There are, in addition to some great stencil spray paintings by Emess and C215, a lot of paper artworks by Alias, Mean Marek and the three Israeli street artists Foma, The Drip Up and Klone, who recently visited Berlin, and a new piece by famous graffiti artist Roa, who is in town at the moment. Furthermore some rather inspiring urban artworks by less known artists leaped to my camera’s focus… ...

As mentioned before, the opening of the Papergirl #5 exhibition took place yesterday at the Neurotitan Gallery in Berlin. About 230 different artist and art collectives, including Luna Park, Dave the Chimp, SP-38, The Walters, Tika, 1010, Rero, Various & Gould and many more joined the alternative urban art project this year and made me happy while looking at their great prints, collages, painting, stencil artworks and photos! In the style of American paperboys the art project Papergirl distributes rolled art pieces to random passers-by in the streets. It is a question of chance and luck who will eventually catch such a roll of art, but the excitement of making surprising presents is actually what Papergirl is all about! Some days ago, I informed you about that amazing upcoming art project “Papergirl”, which will be held for the fifth time in Berlin. Its basic idea is to bring art into the public space in a different way than usual. Therefore, the activists and their helpers will pack a huge count of paper art rolls which will be shared in the public space after showing all participating artworks in one big exhibition. ...

It would be a torture to write down all the participating artist of this year’s issue of the Berlin-based Papergirl project. 238 different artist from all over the globe joined that alternative street art project, which was held the first time in 2006. They ride their bikes, carrying rolls filled with collections of art, throwing them to lucky catchers on the street, in their cars, other bikers, people who might not normally be exposed to urban art. In addition a Papergirl USA project recently launched and new projects are sprouting up in over a dozen cities around the world. Last Friday, the slightly different street art exhibition by urban artist 1010 opened in Berlin and presents really interesting, strange and minimalistic paper artworks. For about 15 years, 1010 is an active part in Germany’s street art scene. Therefore, the Hamburg-based artist is one of the last still active street art veterans. Although the media he uses ranges from wall paint to paste-ups and paper cuts, you can find similar elements in each of his artworks. ...

Alien-like creatures waked up in the streets of Tel Aviv several years ago, when internationally known street artist Klone began to paste-up his extraterrestrial artworks. Now he’s in Berlin and placed some new colorful paper artworks. Formerly known as graffiti artist Make, Klone started pasting hand-drawn paper characters, which should replace his tags and throw-ups, about 5 to ix years ago… The predator characters developed after a long process, when I’ve been working with my oneline drawings, trying to define a character in one line and parralel I was working on series of more realistic paintings of real predators incorporating them into my streetwork, I wanted to create something new, something that might make people think a bit different, so i came up with charaters that combine the animal and human features, people got disturbed and eventually embraced the new and the weird species in the city. Yes, it’s a commercial work, but nevertheless it’s really amazing! The Berlin-based street art crew Mentalgassi did a nice job at the Alexanderplatz in the heart of Berlin. They created so-called “Flip-Images”, large-scale image-installations which make it possible for the public to see different images from different perspectives. Mentalgassi are well-known for their oversized paste-ups, showing expressive, crazy faces of their friends. In the past, they also experimented with concrete, stickers and X-films, self-sticking color transparencies, for the ticket validators on the Berlin subway-stations. ...
