Photorealistic Painting: Mastering Hyperrealism in Art

As you already know, Washington D.C. native urban artist James Bullough is currently creating two huge, photo-realistic murals in Berlin - here comes the corresponding painting action photo-series! Located near Berlin’s Rosenthaler Platz, the upcoming contemporary art space Torstrasse 111 / Co Verlag provides enough space for the two striking giants James is painting for several days now using all his photo-realistic graffiti skills to finish up with both murals, before the new art space opens the first time at the end of April. ...

To entitle them On the shoulders of giants is probably the best way to describe these huge murals by American urban artist James Bullough coming up at Torstrasse 111 in Berlin… James Bullough, who grew up in the suburbs of Washington DC, began sketching and eventually devouring anything he could find with even a hint of graffiti inspirited imagery on it in his early teens and developed in that way the required skills for photo-realistic graffiti works. Right now, he is painting two impressive giants into one of the arising new art spaces at Torstrasse 111, a contemporary location for art, and invited me to join him. ...

Last Ride is the name of an interesting installation-painting by Portuguese urban artist Mr. Dheo, addressing car crashes with lethal consequences. Documented in an disturbing video Dheo explains the intention which brought him to paint this piece on a scrap yard… As an autodidact, Dheo’s first contact with graffiti appeared in the age of fifteen and soon his drawings turned into countless letter studies. Months later he did his first street painting and started to meet other artists to whom he related and that motivated him to carry on. ...

As all of you already know, Australian graffiti artist Matt Adnate recently opened his Point of View show in Berlin and after my photo-series of his studio work, the Berlin Collective created this pretty nice documentary of the rest of his Berlin trip! As a graffiti artists I always had to work in the night, had to run around and I never really had the freedom to just paint. (Adnate) Combining nice footage and some statements by Adnate, the video gives some interesting insights into the artists world and explains why he likes to paint for galleries or in abandoned buildings. ...

Do you remember the photo-series I took of Australian graffiti artist Matt Adnate, when he painted new works for his Berlin solo-show? Last week, he finally opened the show at Box32 Gallery, simply entitled Point of View, and of-course I joined the party together with some friends and - in addition to some good drinks - took some quick photos… I’ve seen a lot of different faces in my travels of the past 6 months. From the eyes of kids that have lived the lives of adults in India, to people losing there faces in clubs in Berlin. ‘Point of View’ seemed like the perfect title for my show, as all of the faces in the show are my interpretations of people I’ve recently seen and met. As I told you, the first solo-show by graffiti-legend Mode2 in Berlin opened its doors last Friday! Entitled Offerings the show presents a new series of canvas paintings, dedicated to the female body… Mode2 creates an atmosphere in which the viewer is being stimulated to think about their own sexuality and confront their own universes of associative conditioning. An offering from the artist to his viewers, if you may. Bringing together old Mode2-fans and fine art collectors, the well-frequented show bridged a wide range of different art enthusiasts with different backgrounds. Although famous graffiti-legend Mode2 already stayed in Berlin for a long time (a painted several impressing murals, e.g. at Schau Fenster Gallery and Jacki Terrasse), he still didn’t had a solo-exhibition in town - until now! Lucas Carrieri Gallery is going to exhibit a new series of paintings by Mode2 this Friday! Simply entitled Offerings, Mode2 presents large-scale paintings of the female body, drawn from a specific perspective… This perspectival point of view suggests that the female is significantly larger than the canvas, making her appear like a goddess. Underlining this position are the male figures in the paintings - much smaller than the female figure – that appear to be making offerings to the goddesses. ...

Australian urban artist Matt Adnate is in Berlin right now, preparing new artworks for his upcoming solo-exhibition at Box32! He recently invited me to his studio… Born and raised in Melbourne Adnate, who is part of the AWOL crew, originally comes from plain letter-writing but started creating photo-realistic paintings and has also worked with larger than life canvases, wooden sculptures and mural works in the last years. His latest urban artworks combine the rough nature of spray-painted tagging styles and the fineness of portrait-painting and can also be found in some abandoned areas in and around Berlin! ...

Do you know Maclaim? It’s an very interesting urban fine art collective consisting of the four famous artists Case, Tasso, Akut and Typism. They are internationally well-known for their fantastic mixture of photo-realistic graffiti and modern typography. The history begins in 1999, when Akut, Case and Rusk started common projects. During the first two years the trio mainly met up in Weimar/ Germany. It was Rusk who first made contact between Case and Akut on one side, and Tasso on the other. For Akut, Case and Tasso it was easy to work together and to complement each other, as they had already focused on photo-realistic spraying irrespectively of each other. (About Maclaim) ...
