Stencil art enables rapid reproduction of detailed imagery in street art, combining precision design with efficient application for powerful urban messaging.
Stencil art represents one of the most technically sophisticated and politically effective forms of street art, enabling artists to create detailed, reproducible imagery while maintaining the speed necessary for urban interventions. This technique involves cutting designs into materials like cardboard, plastic, or metal, then applying paint through the openings to create precise, consistent images on various surfaces.
Stenciling allows complex imagery to be reproduced quickly across multiple locations, making it ideal for political messaging, social commentary, and artistic campaigns.

Stencil Street Art: Sten & Lex in Rome
The last post I wrote about famous Italian stencil street art duo Sten and Lex was about the great mural artwork they created in Lyon, France back in 2010 - Now it’s time again!
Sten and Lex who are well known for their fantastic and often huge street art stencil works recently created a new mural in Rome! Based on a former wall portrait sketch, the duo created a stencil again and ported the image to the streets of Rome - more precisely on the door of a former porn cinema. Nice idea and successful realization!

Evol in London
The godfather of detailed urban interior stencil artworks Evol recently finished his (probably first) piece in London! Being in the British capital for a big Christmas show with Pictures on Walls, Evol just left a first mark and spray painted a couple of concrete barricades near Smithfield Market.
Again he created a incredible microcosms, including nice hand-finished miniature tags and pieces on his internationally well-known facade-stencils and again it’s just great to see another finished artwork by him.

TV Kills Your Brain - Boa Mistura
The Spanish urban art collective Boa Mistura (consisting of the five artists Arkoh, Derko, Pahg, Purone and Rdick) just informed me about their latest installation:
Entitled Planned Obsolescence the TV installation combines outdated technology with stencil art and reminds me somehow on one of these old-school electro clubs in Berlin… However, I liked it, especially because it again shows the diversity of Boa Mistura, who want to represent a mixture of perspectives which complement, influence and mix themselves together in order to create something better. (about Boa Mistura).

Boxi at Lazarides, Photos
As some of you already know, London’s famous Lazarides Gallery recently started showing works by well-known stencil artist Boxi!
Utilising both the streets and gallery walls as his canvas, the artist is a master of the stencil turning away from their traditional anarchist use to challenge the norm through boldly heightened realistic figures. With fear and its manipulation as the underlying theme, his art channels a deeply disturbing voyeuristic experience for the viewer playing with spatial perception of the surrouding environment. (Lazarides)

Czarnobyl - Heavy Metal Stencil Art
Last time I visited Czarnobyl’s studio in Kreuzberg, the Berlin-based street artist showed me some test and preparation works for a new series of stencil artworks. Finally he finished a few and uploaded some photos I just stumbled upon. The new series focuses on a great style-mix by combining rough backgrounds with multi-layered greyscale stencils, what makes the it transporting some heavy metal feelings, if know what I mean!?
Czarnobyl is one of Berlin’s most famous stencil artists and describes his style as cyber-punk stencil art. I for one really like his new works, what do you think?

FinDAC - Stencil Art in Brest
Fin Dac in Brest
As already mentioned, stencil artist FinDAC and abstract graffiti artist Morten Andersen currently painted at the Crimes of Minds urban art festival in Brest. Recently Fin published some first impressions of one of his murals and arouse in that way a burst of enthusiasm, for what reason I don’t want to withhold those photos from you!
I met FinDAC first during my London-trip last year and was quite surprised when I got to know that I is - with good reason - a well-known stencil artist on the Isles, because I haven’t heard of him before. His mainly Asian-inspired stencil motives are characterized by really detailed handwork, sparkling shadows, complex patterns and a good pinch of freehand spray-painting - his brilliant Jimi Hendrix stencil artworks are good examples!

Virtual Spray-Painting
Virtual Graffiti | In addition to the interesting Wii Spray, there’s another innovative virtual graffiti solution out there which is inspired by drawing, painting, printing and graffiti and tries to translate those techniques into a digital world! Its name: Picturae 2.0!
Using a special screen as canvas Picturae allows you to paint using a spray-can shaped multi-functional controller, which is able to imitate spray-can, brush and mouse behavior. Also working with digital stencils is possible what allows creating some nice effects…

It’s the second episode of the urban art festival “Crimes of Minds” which is organised by French graffiti artist Liliwenn and the non-profit organization Sugar Rush…
The idea behind that event is to bring the creative flair of the big metropolises around the world to this small French town and to document the artworks as well as the artists at work and additionally the reactions of the citizens. For that reason there will be a book recapitulating the entire “Crimes of Minds” process!

Eime - Stencil Art vs. Abstract Painting
Modern Urban Art | A few days ago i stumbled upon works of an urban artist I haven’t seen before, what literally spoken is not that unusual, but this time my mouth formed a smile and my brain told me that these artworks are rather new, fresh and - what’s all the more important - unique.
Portuguese street artist Eime (don’t mix him up with Eine!) creates inspiring painting combining stencil-techniques and abstract painting elements! For me it’s always fantastic to see street artists conquering borders and creating is that way new, outstanding expressions. For the Taildrop Graffiti Jam 2011, Eime’s creative process was documented, which makes it for example possible to see, that he doesn’t spray-paints his stencils, but - as some of you know as color by numbers - paints all the different tones by hand with a brush…
