Explore the World of Tape Art: Creative Installations & More

Organised by Ironside, the two Berlin-based urban artists Buff Diss and Clemens Behr created a nice cardboard and tape art installation for the urban art x-mas market Stattmarkt which took place in the Stattbad Berlin rooms during the last two days… I bumped into them during the setup on Friday and took some quick shots of both preparing their collaboration installation. In my eyes, the Australian street art veteran and the talented student from the renown Berlin University of the Arts are an urban art dream-team due to the fact, that their preferred materials (cardboard and wood vs. tape) and styles (3D installations vs. 2D tape art) complement each other ! ...

Last Friday, Berlin’s Neurotitan Gallery opened its doors for another nice group-exhibition entitled Simple is Rare, presenting diverse artwork by different urban-inspired artists like Herr Orm, K 110 and Robert Matzke, just to name a few… Although or probably because of this exhibition’s major topic was simplicity, it was the huge and very complex installation by Clemens Behr which dominated the show-room. By combining cardboard, tape, neon light, paint and wood his walkable and impressing tunnel-like architecture draw almost my entire attention. Looks like, famous Australian tape artist Buff Diss can’t stop. After setting up a new, first blog and hanging around in Taipei for a couple of weeks, he not just found some time to talk with the Stylesight team but also to tape London’s Village Underground for the Make Something from Nothing art event! Using simplest materials to create complex ephemeral architectures German urban artist Clemens Behr is probably a new star in the world of abstract urban art. In June, he went on an excursion to New York City to create several uncommissioned public installations in East Village, China Town, Soho and Brooklyn… I really like this stuff for two reasons: First, using simple materials like cardboard, tape or paper to create impressing artworks is just great. Second, his abstract installations break up the usual city architecture and the urban every-day landscape! ...

Born 1985 in Koblenz, Germany, urban-influenced artist Clemens Behr creates large-scale installations for years. Using a mixture of cardboard, wood, paint and tape, he builds abstract landscapes constructing sudden, complex and ephemeral architectures in both, abandoned warehouses and on the streets. Working with recycled materials and basic geometric forms, Behr dreams up installations that result in subtle confusions between 2D painting and 3D objects. Tape Art Installation | A few weeks ago, internationally well-known urban tape artist Buffdiss started to tape a large-scale installation in the big abandoned swimming pool at Stattbad, an more or less alternative art and culture area in Berlin. Tape Art | Again I have some new info about Berlin-based tape artist Buffdiss (here in action). The Australian-born urban artist combined his trained eyes for impressing patters and his graphically skills to create an interesting new tape art series in an abandoned environment about the “Dido and Aeneas” opera in the last weeks! “Dido and Aeneas” by English Baroque composer Henry Purcell includes a prologue and three acts and is the story of the love between Dido and Aeneas, intrigues and suicide. It is remembered as a monumental work in Baroque opera and although you can like Buffdiss’ tape artwork even if you don’t know the whole story I recommend to read the short synopsis on Wikipedia… ...

Tape, spray-paint and abandoned walls, that’s what the Amsterdam-based urban art duo Graphic Surgery needs to create these fantastic, architectural-inspired, geometrical graffiti artworks. In the last month they were really busy, travelling through Europe and painting new things. I got in touch with their rather interesting wall-paintings some month ago and wanted to get more info about the artists, because I haven’t heard something about them before. Fortunately, Graffuturism did that nice interview with Graphic Surgery earlier this year, which gave me some insights into the thought of Erris Huigens and Gysbert Zijlstra. ...

You know, I have a weakness for tape art and although it seems to be something like a part of a new ad-campaign (unfortunately I’m not able to understand Slovenian…), it’s rather interesting to see what these Slovenian artists, including Kitsch Nitsch, Fejzo, Jurij Lozič, Tilen Sepič and others did with some shopping carts full of tape… …most interesting about the videos is, that they show the flexible possibilities of tape as a tool for artists. It allows to more or less easily create simple as well as quite complex abstract patterns, installations, reduced respectively simplified images and so forth… ...

Since I’m in London, some interesting things happened in Berlin. I will give you a short overview in the next Urban Art Eye Candy post, which should be ready in the next days. But today I show you the new abandoned tape artworks, my friend Buffdiss recently did in some old factories and warehouses… Australian tape artist Buffdiss is well-known around the globe for his fantastic tape installations, showing hands, ornaments, letters or other line-based stuff, whereas some of his latest artworks combine tape and paint and create in this way some new effects! And although it seems the new works are still experimental, I hope to see more of that stuff soon! ...
