Explore the World of Tape Art: Creative Installations & More

As a faithful reader, you may noticed that the Australian tape artist BUFFdiss is in Berlin for a few month and that I was several times on the run with him… Yesterday, I met up with him and the famous French graffiti artist Nelio (Those of you, who already visited Lyon should know him!) to explore an abandoned warehouse in the south of Berlin. It was a great day - we had a lot of fun and took nice photos of rough walls and nice new artworks! Here are some of the shots I took… ...

True Colors is a brand-new and amazing stop motion film by Tomislav Topic, which shows the power of combining different urban art disciplines in one great artwork! When I saw the video first I was really impressed by the fantastic ideas and the kick-ass outworking. Tomislav mixed wall painting, tape art, fire extinguishers, 3D-objects and some other crazy things and tells in that way a nice and creative urban art story… ...

In addition to the nice Wooster Collective meet-up and the Mode2 live-painting I was on the run with Australian tape artist BUFFdiss. Armed with some rolls crepe tape and wearing some darker clothes, he created two nice tape artworks on an old industrial area…and while he taped around, I took some dark action photos! BUFFdiss started creating tape artworks several years ago and moved in that way on from the traditional graffiti and its spray-cans…it was really impressing how fast he made the artworks ready and at the same time we both were impressed with the reactions by some passing people, who were really wondering about what he did… ...

It’s really brilliant to see how simple the master of geometrical tape art, Aakash Nihalani, creates his great artworks! The most recent example is a short video called “Free Hand”, which shows in about 50 seconds, how Aakash sticked one of his actual tape creations to a wall in Brooklyn…it’s like magic… …No, you’re right - the video is reversed and one of the most famous tape artists around has punked you! Nice idea. ...

In October 2009 I informed you about the second edition, called “Gaffa-Urbanism”, of the urban magazine Spacemag by Hamburg based Spacedepartment. Now, the release date is fixed and I was able to cast an eye at the new edition! As you can read in the title, the whole issue is about the new “Gaffa-Urbanism” movement. For that reason, pacemag #2 includes articles about Japanese tape artist Shuetsu Sato, who tapes redirecting hints at the subway-stations in Tokyo and about Australian tape artist BUFFdiss, who is a real globetrotter and tapes great artworks in the urban landscape. ...

Yesterday I met the Australian tape artist BUFFdiss. I was really happy that he had some time for a small session in one of Berlin’s most famous abandoned factories, the “Eisfabrik” in Mitte. If you are living in Berlin or if you have a foible for Berlin, you maybe know that the snow is actually thawing here. For that reason every wall we tried to tape was already wet… Any way BUFFdiss did a nice typo tape art piece and we drunk some beer and everything was fine, but I’m now on the search for some other tape artists around the world who will fight with us against the winter! ...

Some days ago, he published first shots of new, sticky tape artworks from the streets of Berlin… BUFFdiss is the or at least one of the forerunners of tape art. His large-scale hand-sketches are well-known not only in his hometown Melbourne, but also in the rest of the world. Always they are in direct interaction with their architectural, urban surroundings. ...

20 years after the fall of the Berlin Wall, an American TV channel and a German urban artists collaborate to celebrate the end of separation in an artistic way. “Go Beyond Borders” is a tape art project by Berlin-based street artist El Bocho and CNN. In the last days, El Bocho and his crew created unique art installations using tape at historic sites along the former Berlin Wall and made some videos of their actions. ...

Do you know Glitsh? I think she’s a Swedish designer and urban artist with some really interesting intervention concepts. She has a partiality for changing the content of things you could buy at the supermarket. For example for her “Hello Shitty” action from 2008, she replaced a “Hello Kitty” puzzle with a puzzle of a soldier… ...

Yes, i love his artworks! Yes, he is one of my idols and a great inspirational source. Yes, some of my tape artworks are mainly influenced by him. Yes, I talk about L’Atlas! French street artist L’Atlas is currently in New York for his “City Fragments” urban art exhibition. His internationally-known and outstanding artworks became a symbol of the modern mixture of playful typography and the accuracy of architectural presets. Whether with paint, tape or chalk, there are no borders for L’Atlas’ unique style. His signs, letters and compasses are highly recognizable and and there is no restriction on their sizes. ...
