Urban Art Berlin: Explore the City's Vibrant Street Art Scene

Punk, skate and graffiti influences versus cute ninja rabbits, foxes and other illustrative characters - that’s the wild mix content of the Danny Doom vs. Flamat exhibition which opened its doors last Friday at Neonchocolate Gallery in Berlin, presenting culture clashing artworks by urban artist Danny Doom from Berlin and by Leipzig-based illustrator Flamat! As some voices revealed, this art-show is the first part of a more complex art tour by Danny Doom (e.g. including the so-called living-room art tour) who is going to celebrate this last doomed year 2012 (just remember the Maya calendar!) with several different art events taking place probably around the world. ...

Organised by Ironside, the two Berlin-based urban artists Buff Diss and Clemens Behr created a nice cardboard and tape art installation for the urban art x-mas market Stattmarkt which took place in the Stattbad Berlin rooms during the last two days… I bumped into them during the setup on Friday and took some quick shots of both preparing their collaboration installation. In my eyes, the Australian street art veteran and the talented student from the renown Berlin University of the Arts are an urban art dream-team due to the fact, that their preferred materials (cardboard and wood vs. tape) and styles (3D installations vs. 2D tape art) complement each other ! ...

Yes, it’s X-mas again and for that reason, Ironside and Berlin’s Stattbad are going to open the pools for the Stattmarkt, this year’s urban art X-mas market in Berlin! With its diverse concept, this market contains not just the usual design, fashion, jewelry, merchandise, comic, literature and food stuff, but also artwork by independent artists, gallery representatives, photographers, graphic artists and, and that’s the clue, creative entertainment including video-works by Quintessenz crew, live DJ’s during the day and live paintings by Berlin-based urban artists Irgh, Karl Addison and James Bullough! ...

I was really happy, when I noticed the latest murals by a French crew of urban artists called Animae Dementia. As they report on their blog, they are exploring Berlin right now - After they hit the old NSA station Teufelsberg they recently left their marks on the walls of the abandoned Bärenquell Brewery! Being well equipped with straps and other climbing stuff, they are able to abseil themselves from the roof and paint formerly inaccessible wall parts. Nevertheless it’s not just the technique, but also the resulting murals, showing crazy, comic-like animals, which are just amazing! ...

As all of you already know, Australian graffiti artist Matt Adnate recently opened his Point of View show in Berlin and after my photo-series of his studio work, the Berlin Collective created this pretty nice documentary of the rest of his Berlin trip! As a graffiti artists I always had to work in the night, had to run around and I never really had the freedom to just paint. (Adnate) Combining nice footage and some statements by Adnate, the video gives some interesting insights into the artists world and explains why he likes to paint for galleries or in abandoned buildings. ...

Do you remember the Berlin Wall Freedom Park exhibition which was created for the 50th anniversary of the beginning of building the Berlin Wall in 1961? Recently the organizing Dudes Factory published a nice video documenting the creation process and including some nice statements by participating artists like Nunca, Anton Unai, Miss Van and McBess! The Freedom Park is a monument to the memory of the happiness that was brought through the fall of the berlin wall in November 1989, but should also represents a wake-up call about the problems of our times. ...

Urban artists Karl Addison and James Bullough recently finished their new purple mural art works in Berlin! Curated by Etsy and in between the heart of Kreuzberg, the mural shows an elderly women by Addison - the idea of life, inspiration and history - and Bullough’s trademark arrows and combines in that way energy and life-experience. As James informed me yesterday, in addition to this funny mural there’s also a nice video they just put together, which documents the entire project. For that reason I’m able to share this three minutes mural art documentary with you! Seems they had a lot of fun… ...

After eight years and several new layers of paint, Berlin-based artist Brad Downey and curator Andrian Nabi recently revealed an original Banksy mural! banksy revealation The mural, entitled Every Picture Tells a Lie, which was created by the world’s most famous street artist in 2003 as a part of the legendary Back Jumps Live Issue festival in Berlin-Kreuzberg, shows five winged and smile-faced cops and is now part of the What Lies Beneath artwork by Downey, which belongs to the currently running Do not think exhibition at the Bethanien Arts Centre. ...

As I already mentioned last week, some famous urban artists from all over the globe including McBess, Miss Van, Superblast, Dave the Chimp and also well-known Brazilian graffiti artist Nunca (who was part of the Tate Modern’s street art show in 2008) came together to create the temporary Berlin Wall Freedom Park by painting murals on several original wall segments from the former inner-German border. Last Thursday the opening-ceremony took place next to the Spree river, and because I arrived early, I had the chance to take some photos of and have a small chat with Nunca while spray-painting his wall! I’m a big fan of his very unique style and would love to welcome him back in town in near future… ...

After the big Write the Wall event which took place last year in Berlin, celebrating 20 years breakdown of the Berlin Wall, it’s the Berlin Wall Freedom Park which will be created in memory of the Berlin Wall building up 50 years ago!
